To celebrate, I am taking a break from my usual Mixed Media Monday post to spend with my family...and maybe take a nap. While I'm away, you can check out some of the links below. It's a collection of some of the mixed-media scrapbooking posts from my blog's archives, in case you want a little inspiration today. <br />

I decided to stay with a mini art journal size. This month, I'm using a Large Landscape Journal from <a href="http://www.globalartmaterials.com/travelogue.html">Hand Book Journal Co</a>. Don't let the word "large" fool you though. This journal only measures 5.5x8.5". It is larger than last month's journal but I'm ok with it. It gives me more room to play but it's still small enough to complete a page each day.<br />
<br />
This month I have chosen collage as my theme. I ended last month's challenge playing with collage. That means that I can make anything I want as long as it's a collage. I have a lot of ideas that I want to try so it seems like the perfect theme for this month.<br />
<br />
Here's a look at my pages this week.<br />

<u>Some Thoughts on a Creating a Daily Practice</u><br />
<br />
I admit it, a daily practice can be overwhelming. I find it's best to think about it as something I am going to do today. If I think about this as a practice that I'm going to do everyday for a year, for example, I get overwhelmed and I start to doubt myself. What will I make? Where will I find the time everyday? If I think of it like a great big project there is too much opportunity for doubt and self-sabotage to creep in.<br />
<br />
I like to think of it in terms of what I'm doing today. I plan what I'm going to do in advance. I just think to myself, "What am I going to make today?" Sometimes I have great ideas and sometimes I have no ideas - zero. That's where having a theme each month is helpful. It isn't limiting. Instead, it inspires my creativity because it's a starting point. It's the first step of the process...well, my process anyway. The next step and the step after that all flow from there.<br />
<br />
Somedays it's easier than others but it is always worth the effort. It feels good - really good - to make something and share it everyday. I appreciate every like and every follow I get on Instagram but it's more than that too. It is self-satisfying. I make myself happy because I am making time to do something I love. Does that make sense? <br />
<br />
I would love for you to join me on Instagram. You can usually find me there - sharing what I'm making and seeking inspiration. My handle is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cathiereed/">@cathiereed</a><br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by today.<br />

Each week, I share a mixed media
layout and include the instructions. The instructions contain the steps
to make the project and contain any tips and tricks I have picked up
along the way. If you ever have any questions about techniques or
products that I used to make this layout, leave a note in the comments
and I will get back to you. </i><i>I
know that mixed media can be intimidating but I think of it as a
creative adventure. Yes, it requires practice and patience but the
rewards are worth it - I promise! </i><br />
<br />
This week, I found myself playing with the Mini Art Stones by Finnabair for Prima. I fell in love with them recently and I was wondering if they could be colored. That little "what if..?" led me to create this layout.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29462722214/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_2"><img alt="October 3_2" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8420/29462722214_d075003b1a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

Sisal Twine (from my local hardward store) <br />
Fabric Flowers - unknown<br />
Tissue Paper - white (from my local dollar store)<br />
Old Paint Brushes - for gesso and Mica Powder<br />
Water Spray Bottle<br />
<br />
<u>Instructions: </u><br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<i>Please note: You can use a heat gun or hair dryer to dry any of these products or you can let them air dry. It's up to you and how much time you have to create your project. </i><br />
<br />
<b>1. Crumple tissue paper and collage to background.</b> Spread a thin coat of Soft Gloss Gel on the background and press the tissue paper into the background. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Apply modeling paste through stencil.</b> I used my silicon brush to put Light Modeling Paste on my background through the Weaving stencil. Set aside to dry.
<br />
<br />
<b>3.</b> <b>Gesso.</b> Apply gesso to background using an old brush or foam brush. You need something that can spread the gesso in between the gaps of the stencil pattern. Set aside to dry.
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Add color.</b> For this layout, I wanted to use my Mica Powders. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/30011530451/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_7"><img alt="October 3_7" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8551/30011530451_6b47538a4e_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Just look at all that shimmer.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29466961824/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_8"><img alt="October 3_8" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5046/29466961824_f77a50ddb1_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Spritz water on the background. Dip small brush into jar of Mica Powder
and then brush the powder into the water on the background. Keep adding Mica
Powder until you are satisfied with your background.<br />
<br />
<i>Tip: If you are adding multiple colors, dry between each color.</i><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29980928252/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_9"><img alt="October 3_9" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8276/29980928252_2d6da56df6_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29466958234/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_10"><img alt="October 3_10" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8766/29466958234_579f16fc2a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/30094963405/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_11"><img alt="October 3_11" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8825/30094963405_cd7a562863_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Optional:</b> Spritz background with sealant. The Mica Powder does not have a fixative so it will reactivate every time it gets wet. I knew that I was going to add the Mini Art Stones to my background so I wanted to seal the background. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/30094963405/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_11"><img alt="October 3_11" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8825/30094963405_cd7a562863_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/30011524301/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_12"><img alt="October 3_12" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8548/30011524301_0fdb58f950_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>7. Embellish.</b> I added some strips of muslin, wood veneer words and fabric flowers before adding the Mini Art Stones. I wanted to try coloring the Mini Art Stones so I poured some into a small container. You don't need many - a little goes a long way. Then I sprayed some Color Bloom 2 - Brimstone Wings into the container. I mixed it with a palette knife and set them aside to dry. When they were dry, I brushed them onto my layout.<br />
<br />
Here's what they look like when they're colored. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29466952364/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_13"><img alt="October 3_13" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7529/29466952364_419fbcec9a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
To apply them to my layout, I used a brush and Soft Gloss Gel and brushed them into place.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/30094956305/in/dateposted-public/" title="October 3_14"><img alt="October 3_14" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8377/30094956305_c91f1d2a3a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Mixed media techniques and products are so versatile and that makes it easy to create a unique layout that suits your pictures or stories. The layout this week is about my youngest son. His favorite color is green so I wanted a green background and green embellishments. They were easy to make with a few mixed media products - Color Bloom 2 Spray inks and Mica Powders. These products are available in so many different colors that you could make a background to suit your story using the same techniques I shared here today in your favourite color palette. All you need is a little time to put things together and a little time to let them dry.<br />

Thanks for stopping by today.<br />

I have always loved collage work and it was wonderful to finally spend some time learning more about it. A daily challenge is a great way to get things done and dive deeper and learn more about products or techniques.<br />
<br />
I realized how much there is to learn and I find that very exciting and stimulating. I was surprised to discover my collage style so quickly - that rarely happens. It usually takes me forever to settle on a style. I often jump from one style to another because I want to try everything. I don't know if it's a benefit of a daily practice but I learned that I like to use grids in my collages. That doesn't mean I won't try other things because I am curious but I think you can expect to see more grids.<br />
<br />
So, here's a look at the last pages of my mini art journal.<br />

<br />
So, now what?<br />
<br />
Well, I've decided to keep working on the mini art journaling challenge. I've had to move to another book because I have run out of pages in this one and it's time to change things up a little. The size is pretty similar to what I used in September but the pages are better quality. I'll talk about the book I'm using share more of the pages next week.<br />
<br />
I want to see what will happen if I extend this challenge beyond 30 days. Will it still be enjoyable or will I burn out? Will I run out of ideas? I won't know until I try.<br />
<br />
I will be sharing my progress and art journal pages daily on Instagram. I'm sharing my art journal pages there every day and that's a part of the process too. It keeps my accountable and it's exciting to share what I've made and to see how people react to it. You can find me <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cathiereed/">@cathiereed</a>.<br />

KTOL. It's an album that I am making in a class that I take at my local store - <a href="https://thepaperie.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">The Paperie</a>. The class is taught by my friend, <a href="http://hellokrista.com/">Krista.</a>
In this class, we get together each month and make a layout and a set
of pocket pages for a month's worth of photos. I've fallen behind (I
usually do in this class) and I'm playing catch-up. While I wait for some supplies to arrive, I am sharing some pages from my 2015 Keeping Track of Life album.</i><br />
<br />
Last week, I shared the <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/09/keeping-track-of-life-august-2015-pages.html">August spread</a> from my 2015 Keeping Track of Life album and wrote about how I love looking back at this album. It is a wonderful thing to see how our family life looked back then. Of course, I flipped through the whole album and the pages from my September spread caught my eye.<br />
<br />
We spent some time in the Bahamas last September. It was a fabulous family vacation and one that my kids still talk about. Here's a look at the spread. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29312611324/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 28_1"><img alt="September 28_1" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8272/29312611324_1c8fc14fbd_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29312611674/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 28_2"><img alt="September 28_2" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8523/29312611674_7b607aa94d_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And here's a look at the layouts we made in class. It is supposed to be a 2-page spread but I broke mine up and placed the two layouts back to back in a single page protector.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29312611154/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 28_4"><img alt="September 28_4" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8034/29312611154_524f7fff59_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29312611604/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 28_3"><img alt="September 28_3" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5220/29312611604_0428d09b2a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
There's nothing fancy about these pages because I made a 6x12" album about this trip. I shared photos of this album in the two blog posts - <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/06/a-flip-through-my-summer-vacation-album.html">Bahamas Album Part 1</a>
and <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/06/flip-through-my-summer-vacation-album.html">Bahamas Album Part 2</a>. - earlier this year. It has all the details and stories and ephemera of a truly great family trip. But I wondered what else happened in September last year.<br />
<br />
Turns out, quite a lot happened. We remodeled our upstairs bathroom, Gabe lost his first tooth and Ben started a new pre-school. You wouldn't know it though because none of that is in the album. I guess I was still excited about the trip when I made this spread and didn't even think about these other details but I missed finding those stories when I looked at the album. Luckily, I took lots of pictures and they are organized on my laptop so adding them to this album won't be a big deal. <br />
<br />
I don't know if you go back and look at your older albums but it's something that's I encourage you to do. Don't worry about changing things around or adding more layouts - just enjoy them. Making a scrapbook album is fun -absolutely - but looking back is fun, too. I promise.<br />

Each week, I share a mixed media
layout and include the instructions. The instructions contain the steps
to make the project and contain any tips and tricks I have picked up
along the way. If you ever have any questions about techniques or
products that I used to make this layout, leave a note in the comments
and I will get back to you. I
know that mixed media can be intimidating but I think of it as a
creative adventure. Yes, it requires practice and patience but the
rewards are worth it - I promise! </i><br />
<br />
This page is all about the photo. When I took the photo, I thought it
was a cute shot of my kids riding the luggage cart on the way to our hotel room while we were on summer vacation.
That's all I thought it was for years but when I went to scrap it I saw
something that I hadn't noticed before - the expression on my kids'
faces. That's the look of sibling rivalry. Something I'm very
familiar with these days but somehow I missed it back then. So, the story
that I had planned to tell is not the story I am telling with this
layout. It doesn't need a lot of journaling though. The
title and the photo tell the story - two kids, one tablet...uh-oh.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29621072800/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_1"><img alt="September 26_1" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8391/29621072800_1cbf2a0c1f_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This week's layout uses a lot of the same steps and products that I used to make last week's layout. This is one of the wonderful things about mixed media - using the same supplies doesn't mean your project is going to look the same. You can make it different everytime - if you want.<br />

first. Then I sprayed the Brimstone Wings (green). Then I added a little
of the darker Dragonfly Blue to the blue sections of the background. The dark green section was created when the blue and green inks blended together. I chose blue and green for this layout because they are my kids' favorite colors. Then set aside to dry or
dry with a heat gun.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Gesso Ghosting. </b>Place your stencil back over
the background and paint with gesso. I used an old paint brush to paint
the gesso on the background. The spray ink was dry and I used the same
stencil that I had used in Step 2. I only wanted gesso on the raised
image so the stencil worked as a mask and helped me control where I
painted the gesso. This creates a subtle tone on tone effect but I love
it. I shared a full step-out of this technique in last week's <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/09/mixed-media-mondayhe-she.html">Mixed Media Monday blog post</a>.<br />
<br />
<i>Tip: Your ink must be completely dry before you start this step. It won't work if the ink is wet. </i><br />
<br />
Here's a closeup of the effect on this week's layout. It is a subtle effect that makes the background of a layout more interesting.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29288503194/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_2"><img alt="September 26_2" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8288/29288503194_ce21082beb_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Embellish.</b> This week, I used some of the bits and pieces from my stash - wood veneer stars and geotag, doilies and ribbon.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29288503104/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_3"><img alt="September 26_3" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5049/29288503104_b1c3e7fdab_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This is one of my favourite ways to make my layout more interesting and it's also a great way to use things that are languishing in your stash. The ribbon has been sitting on my desk for years and I'm happy to finally use it.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29288502694/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_6"><img alt="September 26_6" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8033/29288502694_f0d299a291_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Funny thing...whenever I think I've used all my wood veneer geotags, I find another little bunch hiding in my stash. Weird, right? <br />
<br />
The phrase stickers are new - <a href="https://www.simplestories.com/product/word-label-stickers">Carpe Diem - Posh collection</a>. I confess that I love phrase stickers and I can't resist picking them up every time I find them in a store. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29288502884/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_4"><img alt="September 26_4" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8248/29288502884_f2d38a65ff_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29288503244/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 26_5"><img alt="September 26_5" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8254/29288503244_8f6780f5aa_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
It's all the little details that make a layout special. It's not just the techniques you use to make the page but also the little bits and pieces you use to embellish and the colors you choose. It's all a part of the process.<br />
<br />
One last thing, I am teaching class this week at my local scrapbook store, <a href="https://thepaperie.wordpress.com/classes/">The Paperie</a>. Here's a look at one of the layouts we'll be making in class. If you're local and interested in making a creative mess, please email or call the store (709-726-5323). <br />
<br />

I am still obsessed with abstract paintings.I can't get enough of playing with color and line and balance to create a piece that works. It's like a puzzle - trying to find a way to fit everything together so that the picture makes sense. It is addictive. Once I get started, I don't want to stop.<br />
<br />
The only drawback is drying time. I use <a href="http://rangerink.com/?product=dina-wakley-media-heavy-body-acrylic-paints">Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Paints</a> which are thicker. Think of paint the consistency of mayonnaise. I usually paint with my fingers and put the paint on quite thick. I like having all that texture on my page but it does take a while to dry. Everything has to be nice and dry before I can add my pen marks. If not, my <a href="http://www.jetpens.com/Uni-ball-Signo-Broad-UM-153-Gel-Pen-White-Ink/pd/380">Signo White Gel Pen</a> reacts with the paint and the color changes from white and my black Fude Ball pen won't write on wet paint.<br />
<br />
So, here's a look at the pages I made during week 3.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829742586/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_1"><img alt="September 23_1" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8203/29829742586_1b33cc5648_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829742486/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_2"><img alt="September 23_2" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8483/29829742486_47f83eda05_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829742416/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_3"><img alt="September 23_3" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8214/29829742416_2f652437c7_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This is one of my favourite pages from this week. It's colorful and detailed and flowery - my favorite things!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782237301/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_4"><img alt="September 23_4" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8023/29782237301_e734f5a86d_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782236991/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_5"><img alt="September 23_5" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8050/29782236991_e5b6e701c9_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782236871/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_6"><img alt="September 23_6" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5655/29782236871_6f104c3fc9_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I left this page more open with fewer pen marks on purpose. It feels like it needs more detail but I'm leaving it as it is. I like the strong vertical lines in this one. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829742256/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_7"><img alt="September 23_7" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8616/29829742256_9074e72797_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782236711/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_8"><img alt="September 23_8" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8760/29782236711_24619a4cf8_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The next day, I filled in almost all the space. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829742146/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_9"><img alt="September 23_9" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8336/29829742146_224f7fcc13_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782236631/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_10"><img alt="September 23_10" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8259/29782236631_8f9d17b7e1_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
You can see here that Magenta and Blackberry Violet paints weren't quite dry and the Signo White Gel pen reacted with the paint. It turns the ink from white to pinky/purply.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829741996/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_11"><img alt="September 23_11" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5715/29829741996_bac2a477ec_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Then I opted for a monochromatic blue page. I don't love this page. It feels bland after all the previous colorful pages. That's ok. Not every page can be my favourite. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29829741846/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_12"><img alt="September 23_12" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8721/29829741846_c68fb23021_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782237551/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_13"><img alt="September 23_13" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8315/29782237551_679037d699_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29751312632/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_14"><img alt="September 23_14" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8538/29751312632_c550b193ec_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This page is another page that I don't love. I decided to try adding triangles but it just don't work out. I used my fingers but I probably should have used a brush to paint the triangle shape. I was annoyed that the triangle didn't have a point at the top. I do like the combination of blues and greens though and I love the pen work on the circles. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782237491/in/dateposted-public/" title="September 23_15"><img alt="September 23_15" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8505/29782237491_4c4a2decf8_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29782237451/in/dateposted-public/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="September 23_16"><img alt="September 23_16" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8826/29782237451_edc61f0fd5_c.jpg" width="640" /></a>This orange was a failed attempt at a color combination. The nice thing about using gesso and acrylic paint is that I can change my mind and remove paint or pen marks with a baby wipe. However, I couldn't get that orange out of the crease. I guess I left it there too long and it wouldn't come out when I changed my mind.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
Another week of art journal pages and I couldn't be happier with the progress I'm making. <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/09/art-journal-joy-mini-art-journal_16.html">Last week</a>, I wrote about pushing through the creative resistance - the thing that makes it hard to keep going with a daily practice. This week is easier than last week but still takes work and commitment - even now. Looking back at my pages makes me happy. Yup, even the pages I don't love make me happy. I have learned so much and have enjoyed myself. Art journaling is not a chore for me. It's a joy. That makes all the work worthwhile.<br />
<br />
I have one more week left in my mini art journal and then it's on to the next challenge. I have some ideas but I'm really not sure what I'll pick. If you want to see my daily progress, you can find me posting these
pages and other creative endeavours on Instagram. My handle there is

</i><br />
<br />
The last couple of weeks, I have been working on my Keeping Track of Life album. It's a lot of work but it's worth it. If you're curious, here's what I've been working on.<br />
<br />
January: <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/09/mixed-media-monday-snow-day.html" target="_blank">Layout</a> and <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/restarting-yearlong-project.html" target="_blank">Pocket Pages</a><br />

<br />
This week, I found myself looking through my album from 2015. My youngest started Kindergarten this month and sometimes I wonder where the time has gone. My kids have grown so much in the last year. They aren't babies anymore and I wanted to look back. That's one of the best things about this album - looking back.<br />
<br />
Here's a look at my pages from August 2015.<br />

<br />
<br />
I absolutely love looking at these pages. I love seeing how much the kids have grown and remembering how much fun we had last summer. Last year, Gabe had baby teeth! This year he's got a big kid smile. Looking back reminds me how much I love this project and that inspires me to keep going. There is no such thing as too much inspiration - at least in my world.<br />

</i><br />
<br />
This week, I decided to scrap a photo that has been sitting in my "to-do" pile for ages. It's a photo of my mom with her older brother. They were best friends as kids and they are still are today. It's the perfect story to scrapbook. Here's a look at this week's layout.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29788610105/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 19_1"><img alt="Sept 19_1" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8137/29788610105_ba7e242ca8_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I decided to use the new Prima Color Bloom 2 Sprays instead of heritage colors like browns and greys. This color blue is my mom's favorite color and it worked so well with the photo. This isn't the original photo, by the way, it's a reprint. I have scanned some of my family's older photos so that they are not lost if anything happens to the original and so that I can scrapbook them without worrying about damaging the photo.<br />

Old Paint Brush<br />
<br />
<u>Instructions:</u><br />
<br />
<b>1. Gesso.</b> Apply gesso to background using a silicon brush or
palette knife. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Apply modeling paste through stencil.</b> I used my silicon brush to put Light Modeling Paste on my background through the Harlequin stencil. Set aside to dry.
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Spray ink. </b>I started spraying the lighter Fairy Pond spray ink first. I like the colors to blend and the trick is to use a lot of ink. Spray until there are pools of ink on the page. Then I added a little of the darker Dragonfly Blue to the background. Then set aside to dry or dry with a heat gun.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29752473476/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 19_2"><img alt="Sept 19_2" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8183/29752473476_321c0168a8_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Gesso Ghosting - New Technique. </b>Place your stencil back over the background and paint with gesso. I used an old paint brush to paint the gesso on the background. The spray ink was dry and I used the same stencil that I had used in Step 2. I only wanted gesso on the raised the image so the stencil worked as a mask and helped me control where I painted the gesso. This creates a subtle tone on tone effect but I love it. <br />
<br />
<i>Tip: Your ink must be completely dry before you start this step. It won't work if the ink is wet. </i><br />
<br />
<i>ps: I'm sure I'm not the first one to every try "gesso ghosting". I'm calling it a new technique because it's new to me and it's the first time I'm sharing it here. </i><br />

<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29788610205/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 19_4"><img alt="Sept 19_4" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8009/29788610205_69f1914e1b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
Here's what it looks like when you're done.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29788610135/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 19_6"><img alt="Sept 19_6" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8080/29788610135_26e8494028_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Embellish.</b> This week, I added some shading around the diamonds with the Prima Water Soluble Oil Pastels. I colored directly on my background and blended it in with my fingers. I also added some Chunky White Stampendous Embossing Enamel. I didn't want to add white ink because the Prima Color Bloom 2 sprays react whenever they get wet. If I used white ink, the Color Bloom sprays would have reacted with the ink and turned it blue. I pressed my VersaMark pad onto my background and sprinkled the embossing enamel on top. Then I used my heat gun to melt the embossing enamel. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29496060270/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 19_7"><img alt="Sept 19_7" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8218/29496060270_4ef3199143_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I added the beads, wood veneer stars and white Art Sugar with some Soft Gloss Gel on a brush. It's so easy to control where things are going when you use a brush. I didn't want to overload the layout with embellishments so I stopped there.
<br />
<br />
I'm so happy with how this page turned out. I can hardly wait to show it to my mom. Maybe I'll get her to add some journaling to the back. Wouldn't that be great?<br />
<br />
I hope you find some time to make something this week.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by.<br />

I prefer to use acrylic paint in this mini art journal because the paper is just too thin for watercolors. Otherwise, the books are holding up surprising well. I wasn't sure that these mini journals would be up to the full mixed media experience but so far the spine is intact and there isn't any seepage in between pages. I haven't used any masking tape to reinforce anything either. It's great.<br />
<br />
<i>If you're curious about last week's pages and the journals I'm using you can read all about it in <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/09/art-journal-joy-mini-art-journal.html">last week's post</a>. </i><br />
<br />
Here's a closer look at this week's pages.<br />
<br />
Still inspired by flowers, I made this sunflower inspired page. I think it looks more like a gerbera daisy. Either way, I used a palette knife to get the shape of the flower and then used my fingers to blend in more color. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29697024365/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_13"><img alt="Sept 16_13" height="512" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8281/29697024365_c0606e2627_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I love the texture on this one.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29072326823/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_14"><img alt="Sept 16_14" height="512" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8132/29072326823_3524e79eb8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I had a lot of fun making the blue background for this page. Lots of mixing and blending with my fingers. I made the flower by cutting up <a href="http://www.lowes.com/pd/Easy-Joint-Tape-2-in-x-100-ft-Solid-Self-Adhesive-Joint-Tape/4763889">joint tape</a>. I have a few rolls in my stash that I'm hoarding. You can't get this stuff in Canada so I had my husband pickup some up the last time he was in the US on business. He's the best!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29584269252/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_1"><img alt="Sept 16_1" height="512" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8293/29584269252_c91ac09527_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I cut and layered the petals to create the flower. I just kept going until I liked the size of my flower.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660209526/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_2"><img alt="Sept 16_2" height="512" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8539/29660209526_34267f7e93_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This background was another experiment in finger painting. It's so much fun but you go through a lot of wipes. I cut the flowers from manila shipping tags that I keep on my desk. I swipe any acrylic paint that's leftover from a project onto the tags. I'm not trying to make anything but they look pretty. I cut up the tags and made these flowers. This is one of my favorite pages so far.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660208736/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_3"><img alt="Sept 16_3" height="512" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8033/29660208736_3b362e7435_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660209456/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_4"><img alt="Sept 16_4" height="512" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8758/29660209456_caf410b136_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Sadly, this page met with disaster and stuck together.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660208646/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_5"><img alt="Sept 16_5" height="512" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7484/29660208646_18afcbf749_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I still have the photo I posted on Instagram so this is what it looked like before. I have been using <a href="https://www.currys.com/catalogpc.htm?CATEGORY=DORLANDS_WAX_MEDIUM">Dorland's wax medium </a>on all my pages with acrylic paint to keep them from sticking together and it works fine. This page was made with India Ink so either the wax doesn't on India Ink or I didn't put enough on the page. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660209386/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_6"><img alt="Sept 16_6" height="512" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8143/29660209386_20ae118e0e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And now for something completely different...<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660208486/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_7"><img alt="Sept 16_7" height="512" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8219/29660208486_f12d9a9fc4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I love this page. It's my other favorite page this month. I could look at it for ages. I painted with my fingers and added marks and doodles. It came together so easily. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660209296/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_8"><img alt="Sept 16_8" height="512" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8619/29660209296_cdeac22762_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I tried another abstract piece the next day. I didn't have as much time so it doesn't have as many details. The color palette is more subdued and I think I would like it better if it were more colorful. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29697024485/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_11"><img alt="Sept 16_11" height="512" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8472/29697024485_11724286fa_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29072326993/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_12"><img alt="Sept 16_12" height="512" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8481/29072326993_c348f9b9f2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's my last page. I painted an abstract background and then painted the pod/tree shapes in Liquitex Acrylic Ink - Carbon Black with a brush. Then I added a wash of white paint to the background to knock it all back. When all the paint was dry, I added some marks and doodles with the Carbon Black acrylic ink.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29660208786/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_9"><img alt="Sept 16_9" height="512" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8291/29660208786_3ac2bef73d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29695918105/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 16_10"><img alt="Sept 16_10" height="512" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8396/29695918105_f2c28d1819_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I am at the mid-way point for this challenge and it's getting harder
to start pages. It feels like I'm running out of ideas and I don't have a lot time to sit down and come up with some more. Life is busy with all kinds of new responsibilities like school
pick-ups and after-school activities and it's taking a
lot of my time and attention. It's hard to be creative when I'm rushed for time.<br />
<br />
It would be
easy to stop this challenge or take a break or cheat and make a bunch of
pages on the weekend when I have more time but I'm not going to do
that. Something similar happened last month with my watercolor flower
challenge. Halfway through I found it really hard but I kept going and
it got easier and I created some of my favourite pages. I'm betting on
the same thing happening this month so I'm going to keep going. Wish me luck!<br />
<br />
If you want to see my daily progress, you can find me posting these pages and other creative endeavours on Instagram. My handle there is @cathiereed.<br />
<br />
I hope you have some time this weekend to make something that makes you happy.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by today.<br />

</i> <br />
<br />
<br />
Today, I am sharing the April layout and pocket pages for my Keeping Track of Life or KTOL album. Let's start with the layout I made in class.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29571439612/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_1"><img alt="Sept 14_1" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8457/29571439612_25d2c56812_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This lovely layout was designed by for the class by the instructor (my friend), <a href="http://www.hellokrista.com/">Krista Wells</a>. I added the title and the wood veneer tile but that's pretty the only thing I added. Well, the photos are mine too. I have no problem putting my 2 boys on pink pages and I'm not worried about whether they mind. Pink is just another color in my world.<br />
<br />
This month, I used 2 8.5x11" pocket page protectors for the smaller stories. The first page is mainly photos of my kids and our puppy, BG. I love these cute photos and my KTOL album is the perfect place for them. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601242991/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_2"><img alt="Sept 14_2" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8359/29601242991_4033325a5e_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I made the journaling card using some scraps leftover from class. This is something I like to do to tie the pocket pages into layout we make in class.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29571439512/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_3"><img alt="Sept 14_3" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8082/29571439512_550a78389f_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's a closeup.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601242931/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_4"><img alt="Sept 14_4" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8360/29601242931_015edc5b6c_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The next page has lots of room for journaling. I took the boys to a local play place over the Easter break with some friends and I wanted to have room to tell the stories from that adventure. I added lines to my journaling cards using a FriXion pen. When I'm finished, I will use my heat gun to the erase the lines. The FriXion ink disappears when it's heated with a heat gun. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601243341/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_5"><img alt="Sept 14_5" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8191/29601243341_3bfc3958c3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's a closeup of the simple cards that I made for this page. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601242821/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_6"><img alt="Sept 14_6" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8008/29601242821_b326fb6334_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601243231/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_7"><img alt="Sept 14_7" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8780/29601243231_9ae7ce6e0c_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I like to add extra embellishments to my pocket pages. It's a great way to use up all the lovely supplies in my stash.<br />
<br />
And here's the last page.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29601242701/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 14_8"><img alt="Sept 14_8" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8340/29601242701_e5422e08de_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Simple-ish is the way to go when you have to get something done quickly. I might go back and a few ink splatters. I don't think you can have too much color or too many ink splatters. All I have to do is finish the journaling and that should take too long.<br />
<br />

layout and include the instructions.
</i><br />
<br />
This week, I found my inspiration on Prima Marketing's website. I decided to use their "Build A Page" sketch for their <a href="http://prima.typepad.com/prima/2016/09/september-challenges.html">September Challenges</a>. These is so much mixed media inspiration with these challenges each month and there is something for everybody. You should check out the cards and tags too - they are amazing.<br />
<br />
Here is this week's sketch-inspired layout.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957993/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_1"><img alt="Sept 12_1" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8006/29005957993_0c88b17f99_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I wanted to make a simpler layout this week. I have had this photo of my sister with her son and my son waiting to be scrapped for years. This week I was finally able to put it all together.<br />
<br />
Here are the supplies and steps I used to make this week's layout.<br />
<br />
<u>Supplies:</u><br />

Lace<br />
Paper Doily<br />
Buttons: Pink, Navy Blue<br />
<br />
<u>Instructions:</u><br />
<br />
<b>1. Gesso.</b> Apply gesso to background using a silicon brush or palette knife. Gesso makes the watercolor paper non-porous so that the spray ink doesn't sink into the paper. I use spray ink on a lot of my mixed media layouts so that's why my first step is almost always to put gesso on my paper.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Apply modeling paste through stencil.</b> I used my silicon brush to put Light Modeling Paste on my background through the Harlequin stencil. Set aside to dry.<br />
<br />
<i>Tip: You can dry Light Modeling Paste with a heat gun but you have to be careful not to overheat or it will puff up. Sometimes, I will overheat the modeling paste on purpose to create this effect but today I decided to let it dry on it's own.</i><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957873/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_3"><img alt="Sept 12_3" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8542/29005957873_447c1d610e_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Spray Ink.</b> I am an over-sprayer. I like to spray lots of ink and let it move and blend on the background. I sprayed a lot of ink on the background and set it aside to dry. When the Color Blooms are dry they have the most gorgeous shimmer. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957133/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_7"><img alt="Sept 12_7" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8100/29005957133_428e35d6f3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Assemble background.</b> I cut down the watercolor paper from 8.5x11" to 8x10". Then I layered some pattern paper behind to make the layout 8.5x11". This step is completely optional but I did it to recreate the frame shape in sketch - even if it is an asymmetrical frame.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957683/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_4"><img alt="Sept 12_4" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8369/29005957683_a9b8239282_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Embellish.</b> As always, this step is completely up to you. Use whatever you have in your stash that works with your layout. I picked some white gold thread and lace, some buttons and 3 chipboard butterflies because that's what worked for my layout.<br />
<br />
I am almost finished with that pack of Prima flowers. I am going to miss them when they're gone. I love to use them on all my layouts lately.<br />
<br />
Here are some closeups of my embellishments.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957573/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_5"><img alt="Sept 12_5" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8090/29005957573_bf4f85f419_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957343/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_6"><img alt="Sept 12_6" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8602/29005957343_9d9efb43bc_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And a final look at the layout with a closeup of the journaling.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29005957463/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 12_2"><img alt="Sept 12_2" height="800" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7714/29005957463_8d8c9a0589_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This layout is simple and was easy to make. Not every mixed media layout has to have lots of techniques or products or layers. That's one of the things I love about mixed media - it can be whatever your want it to be. It's your layout so you get to decide.<br />
<br />
I hope you find some time this week to make your own mixed media layout. If you do, please leave a note in the comments and let me know where to find you. I love to see what other people are making. <br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by today. <br />

This month, I have decided to make a mini art journal page everyday. I didn't have a mini art journal so I made one. I took 2 Amy Tangerine mini notebooks and glued them together. It was a simple way to create a mini art journal with 30+ pages. Each spread is 2 pages that measures about 5x7".<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29513000846/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_1"><img alt="Sept 9_1" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8356/29513000846_9a93d0ed6b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The joy of using a smaller journal is that it makes this challenge possible. There is no way I could make a larger spread each day. Sadly, it would take more time than I have at the moment. It doesn't take very long to complete a spread and because I'm not spending a lot of time on any one technique or idea I'm free to try and experiment with whatever pops into my mind. <br />
<br />
Last month, I had restricted my supplies and my motif and painted only watercolor flowers. This month, I can use whatever supplies I want but I am still only painting flowers. It is a mixed media approach to flowers.
So far, I have used crackle paste,
Gelatos, Gouache and acrylic paint. The paper is too thin for to paint with watercolors so when I do want to use my watercolors, I watercolor on paper and glue the pages in when they're dry. <br />
<br />
So, here is a look at the first week of my mini art journal pages.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29512999936/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_2"><img alt="Sept 9_2" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8676/29512999936_6b1a3451b3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This is the first spread in my art journal. I used <a href="http://www.fabercastell.com/design-memory-craft-us/products/gelatos">Gelatos</a> like watercolors. I picked up color with a wet brush and layered it on a background that I had painted with gesso.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29512999936/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_2"><img alt="Sept 9_2" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8676/29512999936_6b1a3451b3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I used my gouache paints for this spread. I had never used them before so I wanted to play with them. I covered the background in gesso first and painted over it. It took quite a lot of layers to get the colors as deep as I wanted.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921796424/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_4"><img alt="Sept 9_4" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7798/28921796424_9d9fd9d92b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921797524/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_5"><img alt="Sept 9_5" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8451/28921797524_10705f52e1_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I wanted to try <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gouache">gouache</a> on watercolor paper. Gouache is an opaque watercolor paint and I was wondering how it would work compared to the previous spread where I had used gesso. It was much easier to create deep, rich colors. I definitely want to play with them some more.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921796234/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_6"><img alt="Sept 9_6" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8363/28921796234_bfb6a87f29_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next, I decided to play with my acrylic paints. I chose the <a href="http://rangerink.com/?product=dina-wakley-media-heavy-body-acrylic-paints">Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Paints</a>. I love the colors in this line and I like the texture I can create with heavy body paints. I also had fun blending the colors together while they were still wet.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921796104/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_8"><img alt="Sept 9_8" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8284/28921796104_9a9989725b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29513000516/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_9"><img alt="Sept 9_9" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8064/29513000516_9f84d3a361_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I kept using my acrylics the next night but I decided to try painting with a palette knife. That was a lot of fun. I had started with a coat of gesso and then added a layer of crackle paste before I started painting. I really love how that turned out. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921795814/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_10"><img alt="Sept 9_10" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8703/28921795814_434a485ed8_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
You can see that the paint actually seeped into the crackle to create lots of subtle texture.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921797194/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_11"><img alt="Sept 9_11" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8137/28921797194_771a94c647_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The next day, I went back to my watercolors because I had some watercolor brushes that I had gotten for my birthday. I didn't have a lot of time to play so I glued the page directly into my art journal.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29512999456/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_12"><img alt="Sept 9_12" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8337/29512999456_1399f321de_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Then I went back to acrylic paints again. I started painting with my palette knife but I moved onto my fingers to create some of the shading and texture you can see below.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28921797054/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 9_13"><img alt="Sept 9_13" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8058/28921797054_4a4c8fc649_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
I love how the flowers turned out. There is so much texture there. <br />
<br />

<br />
I don't have a plan when I sit down each day and yet I am never at a loss for ideas. That's a lot of fun. I also like having a daily practice. It's something that I look forward to each day and that's a pretty great feeling. I will keep painting my way through the month and I hope you will stop by next week and see what I've made.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by today.<br />

KTOL. It's an album that I am making in a class that I take at my local store - <a href="https://thepaperie.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">The Paperie</a>. The class is taught by my friend, <a href="http://hellokrista.com/">Krista.</a> In this class, we get together each month and make a layout and a set of pocket pages for a month's worth of photos. I've fallen behind (I usually do in this class) and I'm playing catch-up. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472649146/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_1"><img alt="Sept 7_1" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8135/29472649146_9f1fe07a10_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This week, I am sharing the pocket pages that I made to go with the layout we made in class in March. I never got around to finishing the pocket pages until this week. <br />
<br />
Here's the layout. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472649056/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_2"><img alt="Sept 7_2" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8530/29472649056_baa6f371a5_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Krista designed the layout and picked all the supplies for the class kit. My challenge was to finish my pocket pages using the supplies left over from class and some things I picked from my stash to go with the layout I made in Krista's class in March.<br />
<br />
I put all my pictures in the pocket pages first. It took 2 8.5x11" pocket pages to fit everything. That left me with 13 empty pockets that I needed to fill with journaling cards and embellishments. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648876/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_3"><img alt="Sept 7_3" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8062/29472648876_792db42312_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I sorted through the supplies that I have set aside for KTOL class and used Krista's layout as a guide to direct my color choices. Sadly, the pretty blue papers I used in <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/keeping-track-of-life-2016-may-pages.html" target="_blank">last week's pocket pages </a>didn't make the cut. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648806/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_4"><img alt="Sept 7_4" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8510/29472648806_d1ea4b3464_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I selected these papers to go with the layout. Then I cut up what I wanted to use and slipped them in the pockets. Once every pocket was full of paper, I was able to add journaling and embellishments. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648606/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_5"><img alt="Sept 7_5" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8441/29472648606_70ce79c32d_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's a look at the final results.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648426/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_6"><img alt="Sept 7_6" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8138/29472648426_694ed2a681_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
In addition to the paper (above), I also added some T<a href="https://stampersanonymous.com/tim-holtz-idea-ology-chitchat-stickers-th92998.html" target="_blank">im Holtz Chit Chat Stickers</a> and old <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/Classic-Calico-Laser-Cut-Veneer-Shapes-Tiny/dp/B007VDXYPM" target="_blank">Studio Calico wood veneer stars</a> to my pockets.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648356/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_7"><img alt="Sept 7_7" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8421/29472648356_89f8ebb2be_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I purposefully used the pattern paper we used to make the layout on pocket pages. I had a few scraps left so I also added hearts, circles and stars punched from pattern paper to each spread. This helped tie everything together. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472648236/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_8"><img alt="Sept 7_8" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8575/29472648236_5a3a240048_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here are some closeups...<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29472647846/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 7_14"><img alt="Sept 7_14" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8139/29472647846_301b6faaaa_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I didn't have any photos or journaling to add to the see-through pocket below so I decided to make a shaker pocket. The stickers are stuck on the outside and the wood veneer stars are on the inside. I used my <a href="https://wermemorykeepers.wordpress.com/2015/01/06/new-release-photo-sleeve-fuse-and-waterfall-pockets/" target="_blank">Fuse Tool by We R Memory Keepers</a> to seal it shut.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Here's what the other side of the pocket looks like.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The navy blue heart comes from the text pattern paper by Shimelle - it's on the B side. It was exactly what I needed to finish things off.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I love how these pages turned out. I don't think anyone would know that they were made months apart if they were looking at my album. It took me a little over 2 hours - I think it was 2 hours, 7 minutes to be exact - to finish these pages. It was time well spent.<br />
<br />
There is still lots left to do to be completely up to date with this album. I will keep working away and sharing my progress. If you're curious to see what I've been working on the last couple of weeks, you can check out the finished pages below.<br />

</i><br />
<br />
This week, I was inspired by this pack of Studio Calico Mistables. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29418808496/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_3"><img alt="Sept 5_3" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8454/29418808496_0c0716eb5c_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was cleaning up my desk and found them in a pile. They are from 2012 but I still liked them so I decided to challenge myself to use them on this week's Mixed Media Monday layout.<br />
<br />
Here's a look at at the layout. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29345002642/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_1"><img alt="Sept 5_1" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8772/29345002642_e9436f1858_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
I love how this layout turned out and I'm excited to share the supplies and steps I used to make it.<br />

<br />
<b>1. Place your embellishments on the page. </b>I call this "Put Them All on the Page" and it's my favourite trick when it comes to using up products in my stash. This week, I just kept adding Mistables until I had a background that I liked. It took 35 pieces to make this background.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29373252001/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_4"><img alt="Sept 5_4" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8273/29373252001_87481ba2a5_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>2. Mix Mini Art Stones with 3D Matte Gel.</b> Scoop some 3D Matte Gel using a palette knife onto your craft sheet. Then gently pour the Mini Art Stones on top. I mixed them together using a palette knife. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29164684030/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_5"><img alt="Sept 5_5" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8409/29164684030_5451f0d272_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Spread on background using an old paint brush.</b> I wanted to break up the strong lines of the hexagons so I brushed the Mini Art Stones mixture on with a brush. I just kept moving everything around until I like how it looked. Then I set it aside to dry.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29164683590/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_6"><img alt="Sept 5_6" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8673/29164683590_a51acfd112_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Mix Art Stones with Heavy Gesso.</b> I mixed the Mini Art Stones with Heavy Gesso as I did in Step 2. <br />
<br />
<b>5. Apply Gesso mixture with old paint brush.</b> I applied the Gesso mixture with my old brush making sure that I covered the whole background with gesso. 3D Matte Gel would act as a resist to my spray ink. By covering the whole background in gesso, I am covering up the 3D Matte Gel and making sure there isn't a resist effect. <br />
<br />
<b>6. Add spray ink. </b> I spritzed the background with Fairy Pond spray ink and lots of water. This watered down the ink to give me the color I wanted.<br />
<br />
<b>7. Embellish.</b> This week, I used beads and glass glitter and fine glitter. The trick for adding these supplies to your layout without messy fingers is so simple. Simply dip your brush in Gloss Gel - I used Soft Gloss Gel but 3D Gloss Gel would be even better...<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29453486385/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_7"><img alt="Sept 5_7" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8102/29453486385_c7085e0db9_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Then dip your brush into the glitter or beads or whatever. The glitter will stick to your brush like this.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29373250171/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_8"><img alt="Sept 5_8" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8422/29373250171_35d655c2a3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Then you can brush the glitter or beads into place using your brush. As long as the medium is wet, you can keep moving things around until you are happy.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29453486205/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_9"><img alt="Sept 5_9" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8671/29453486205_65d1dbecde_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's a look at the leaves once the glass glitter is in place.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29418804186/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_10"><img alt="Sept 5_10" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8017/29418804186_2d567a1272_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And here's a look at the same technique using Art Sugar - it's a super fine glitter that works great with this technique.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29418806076/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_11"><img alt="Sept 5_11" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8170/29418806076_b029fe1045_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
It leaves the most lovely shimmer behind when it's dry.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29418803906/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_12"><img alt="Sept 5_12" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8005/29418803906_7db27bcf46_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
To create the snowflakes, I punched vellum with my snowflake punch. Then I pressed the snowflake shape into my VersaMark ink pad. I sprinkled the snowflake with Embossing Enamel and then heated it with my heat gun.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29344999062/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 5_13"><img alt="Sept 5_13" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8292/29344999062_0af7c002b6_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here's a look at the texture you can make with beads, the Art Sugar, the glass glitter and the embossed snowflakes. It's the little details that add up to creative impact.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
You may not have a pack of Mistables in your stash but I'm sure there's
something you've been keeping. Putting everything on the page is a great way to use these products. I always say that it's more fun to look at a scrapbook layout then it is to flip through unused products. I hope you're inspired to give it a try.<br />
<br />
As for me, I liked how this page turned out so I'm planning to use the leftover Mistables on a card front. When I do, I promise to share the results here.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />

<br />
<b>1. I can learn to paint flowers or florals that make me happy.</b> I am really happy with what I have been painting recently - especially the last week. Some of these pieces are my favorites from the whole month. <br />
<br />
<b>2. I can do something everyday.</b> Honestly, I was a bit worried about this one. I don't usually stick with daily challenges but I did it this time. It feels good to complete a daily challenge. I have my 30 day challenge lined up for September - more on that below. <br />
<br />
<b>3. Watercolors are awesome.</b> I have never done much with my watercolors in the past. I don't know why but I have always favored acrylics. Now I can say that I love my watercolors. I have a birthday coming up and looking forward to getting some new brushes. I'm the kind of person that only buys what I love so you know it's serious if I want new brushes.
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Sharing online is ok.</b> I was going to say that sharing online isn't scary but that's not true for me yet. However, I did get used to the idea of sharing my less than great pieces online. Everyone has been really wonderful and supportive. Thanks to all of you who looked and/or liked and/or commented on Instagram. It means a lot.<br />
<br />
<b>5. I have a lot to learn.</b> This is actually really exciting for me because I love to learn new things. The fact that there is so much for me to learn about watercolor makes me feel inspired and excited and those are always great feelings.<br />
<br />
So, here is a look at last week's pages. If you're interested in seeing all my flowers, you can find links to the others below.<br />

<br />
This is one of my favourite pages made during this challenge.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29099504660/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sept 2_3"><img alt="Sept 2_3" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8342/29099504660_de0233872d_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
I love the shape of this one. I was trying for a circle wreath but it went wonky. It's a happy accident.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
This is another one of my favourites. I love monochromatic color schemes. I learned a lot about blending colors this month too. Although not every lesson was as pretty as this one.<br />
<br />

<br />
I love the bright colors on this page. The Prima Watercolor Confection Palettes have the prettiest colors. <br />
For the month of September, I have decided to complete a mini art journal page each day. I'll post pics and the details next week but if you're curious you can follow me on Instagram. I'll be sharing all the pics there. I will share them here too, of course, starting next Friday. You can find me on Instagram @cathiereed.<br />
<br />
Until then, thank you so much for all your support and encouragement. It is very exciting to have people who want to share my creative life.<br />
<br />

These pages are a part of my yearlong album, Keeping Track of Life or KTOL. I like having a yearlong project but I often fall behind and right now <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/catching-up-with-my-yearlong-album.html" target="_blank">I'm inspired to play catch up</a>.<br />
<br />
What I really like about KTOL is that I even though I am a part of a class it's easy to customize my album. I like to use my own supplies from time to time to make 3x4" cards or to embellish my pages. It's great way to use some of the supplies that are sitting in my stash just waiting to be used.<br />
<br />
So, here is a look at the pocket pages I made for May 2016 for my yearlong album.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28726264843/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_1"><img alt="Aug 31_1" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8112/28726264843_1f2095beae_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29347293085/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_2"><img alt="Aug 31_2" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8270/29347293085_edc1a5ef9a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28724458854/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_3"><img alt="Aug 31_3" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8053/28724458854_da59a2ba50_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
All that pretty plaid paper is from <a href="http://www.lawnfawn.com/collections/perfectly-plaid" target="_blank">Lawn Fawn's Perfectly Plaid </a>6x6 paper pad. I only bought one pad but I probably should have bought more. I just love these papers.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29347292765/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_4"><img alt="Aug 31_4" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8075/29347292765_29aed197fe_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The enamel hearts are from Illustrated Faith - <a href="https://www.dayspring.com/illustrated-faith-bless-her-heart-35-piece-enamel-heart-stickers" target="_blank">Bless Her Heart</a>. I love hearts. I always have and will definitely need more of these.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29060227440/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_5"><img alt="Aug 31_5" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8153/29060227440_753e28d5f3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I also used some stickers from a <a href="http://www.scrapbook.com/store/ac-373992.html" target="_blank">sticker book from Amy Tangerine's Better Together collection</a>. These stickers books are awesome. There are 150 stickers in one pack and they are great on so many projects.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28726264293/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_6"><img alt="Aug 31_6" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8521/28726264293_5a0687f346_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Making my own cards is great for using older supplies sitting in my stash. Do you recognize that cork camera? It's very old Studio Calico. I loved them when they were first released and I love them still. So, why not use them? They still look great and the adhesive is still perfect.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28726263313/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 31_7"><img alt="Aug 31_7" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8327/28726263313_e8b0d25911_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And there you have it. Another month completed in my yearlong album and I used some older supplies and some fun new supplies in the process. I call that I win-win!<br />
<br />

</i><br />
<br />
This week, I am sharing another page I made for my yearlong album. I make one chronological album a year and I am always "behind". I wrote about this album and the class that inspired my approach to <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/mixed-media-monday-featuring-tim-holtz.html" target="_blank">this project last week</a>. I am catching up on the pages that haven't I finished - a few layouts and some pocket pages.<br />
<br />
This week's layout was inspired by some selfies I took with my kids on Mother's Day in May. I wanted to use some of the new Prima Color Bloom sprays to create a page that felt like a bright, flowery spring day. Spray inks are one of my favourite supplies and I can't help but try out the new colors when they are released.<br />
<br />

<br />
Instructions:<br />
<br />
<b>1. Apply a thin coat of gesso to the watercolor paper. </b>I usually gesso my background because a thin coat of gesso makes watercolor paper non-porous. That means
that my spray ink won't soak into the paper so I can get it to blend before it dries. A thin coat of gesso doesn't take long to dry so I
usually set mine aside but you can also dry with a heat gun.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Add spray ink.</b> For this background, I started with Cotton Candy and Wild Raspberry Color Bloom sprays. I dried the background with a heat gun before adding some Spring Dandelion to brighten up the background. I dried the background in between colors so they didn't blend. I wanted to keep the colors separate for this background. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29195232742/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 29_3"><img alt="Aug 29_3" height="640" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8126/29195232742_fbb688e03a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Add ink splatters.</b> To create my ink splatters, I unscrewed the top of the spray bottle and tapped the ink nozzle to create splatters on my background. I used Wild Raspberry on the pink section and Spring Dandelion on the yellow section. Then I set it aside to dry.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29015222240/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 29_4"><img alt="Aug 29_4" height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8020/29015222240_8a9f4701cd_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
<b>4. Stamp on the background.</b> I used two stamps and two different colors ink for my background. I used the Hero Arts Friend Definition background stamp with the Delicata Golden Glitz ink on the yellow section. I used the Prima Book stamp with Archival Ink in Plum on the pink section to create a tone-on-tone effect.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29015221640/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 29_6"><img alt="Aug 29_6" height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8656/29015221640_3f19bac421_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
<b>5. Color 3D Matte Gel with spray ink. </b>I wanted to see how the Color Bloom sprays worked with the 3D Matte Gel so I mixed up 2 batches of colored gel. To color the gel, I scooped a small blob onto my craft, spritzed twice with my spray ink and mixed it with a palette knife.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Apply Colored 3D Matte Gel to background. </b>Once I had the color the way I liked it, I spread it onto my background using a stencil and a palette knife.Then I set it aside to dry.<br />
<br />
Here is the Wild Raspberry paste before it dried...<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29195232612/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 29_8"><img alt="Aug 29_8" height="640" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8823/29195232612_9ae5842248_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
<b>7. Embellish.</b> I like to layer paper and stickers behind my photo before adding more embellishments to my background. This week, I also added some Altenew flowers that my friend, Tina, had stamped and diecut. She had a few extra lying of these lovely blossoms laying around so she gave them to me and I was so happy to have them for this layout. I also added lots of Prima flowers because what is a Mother's Day page without flowers?<br />

I love the new Color Bloom sprays - they make me happy. Prima has changed the shape the spray nozzle and it's an adjustment but not a big deal. You have to add water when you get them home as they are shipped unmixed - just pigment powder in the bottle. I liked mixing my own colors and they are so bright and beautiful when you add water.<br />
<br />
I have been having a lot of fun creating 8.5x11" mixed media layouts
lately. Changing the size of my layouts from 12x12" to 8.5x11" has been a great source of
inspiration the last few weeks and I'm going to stick with this size for
the time being.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />

I'm still figuring out how to paint flowers that I like. Sometimes it's harder to do than I think it should be but I am still eager to paint each day and that helps a lot. If I didn't want to paint at all, I'm sure I would have abandoned this challenge.<br />
<br />
I'm still struggling with sharing what I'm painting and making the time to practice.<br />
<br />
I don't have a set time to practice my painting. That's largely because my kids are still on summer vacation so I don't have much of a regular schedule right now. I was planning to paint first thing each morning but most mornings that just isn't possible. I'm usually trying to find time somewhere during the day's events for painting. Maybe it will be easier when they go back to school - we'll see. One thing is certain, I do like having a daily art practice in my life.<br />
<br />
Sharing my daily pieces is still a struggle because I don't always like how they look. I know I'm learning and it's a process but it's not easy to be patient with myself. Happily, there are some benefits of sharing my daily practice pages. First, sharing what I'm working on forces me out of my comfort zone and practicing things that are hard for me. I know I'll never get better if I don't practice the hard stuff but sometimes I need the pressure of having something to post on Instagram to get me to do that work. The other benefit is that I receive a lot of support and encouragement by sharing my pages on Instagram. It helps keep me motivated and focused on making and sharing pages.<br />
<br />
So, let's take a look at the pages I painted this week.<br />
<br />
I was doing so well with this page. I love how the orange tipped blossoms turned out and then I tried to add leaves. I just couldn't paint them to suit the page. So there are parts of this page that I like and parts that I don't. <br />
<br />

I love this page. It's simple and it's blue. <br />

<br />
August 21 was the night of the 2016 Olympics Closing Ceremonies so this page was inspired by the Olympic Rings. I like the shading on the blooms although I don't love the shape. I like how the stems and leaves turned out. I added some details with a <a href="http://www.jetpens.com/Uni-ball-Signo-Broad-UM-153-Gel-Pen-White-Ink/pd/380" target="_blank">Signo white gel pen</a>. <br />

<br />
<br />
I like how the sunflowers turned out on this page. I'm not sure about the leaves though. I still like painting floral wreaths because they give me an opportunity to practice painting the same shapes over and over again.<br />

<br />
I decided to try some flourishes on Tuesday. I have always loved <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminated_manuscript" target="_blank">illuminated medieval manuscripts</a> and the flourish down the side of a page reminds me of them. Flourishes are another shape I will keep working on. It's great for practicing shapes over and over and for filling up a page.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29114916462/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 26_10"><img alt="Aug 26_10" height="640" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8203/29114916462_d773fffa24_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
<br />
The next day, I tried another flourish using different blooms. I was going for <a href="http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/gerbera-daisy/growing-gerbera-daisies.htm" target="_blank">Gerbera Daisies</a> but didn't quite get it right.<br />

<br />
<br />
I do love the thin vines and...<br />

the tri-coloured leaves. I think those turned out really well.<br />

<br />
<br />
Here's my final page for the week. I love the color combination for this page. I used lots of layers while painting the blooms. I didn't want to add leaves. I liked the white space on the page as if someone had scattered flowers there.<br />

<br />
I am nearing the end of this challenge. Next Wednesday is my last day and I'm trying to decide if I will continue painting flowers or try something else. I have come a long way but I think that I could make even more progress if I keep practicing.We'll see. In the meantime, I have a few more days painting pretty flowers.<br />

Last week, I wrote about how I need to <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/restarting-yearlong-project.html" target="_blank">start working on that album again</a> because I haven't done anything on it in a while. There's quite a To-Do list and I'm working my way through it and sharing it all here.<br />
<br />
I don't mind being "behind" with this album. As a scrapbooker, I'm behind all the time because I can only create a scrapbook page or mini album after something has happened. So, I don't worry about being caught up but I do like to finish what I start and that brings me back to my yearlong album. It's started and well underway but not where I would like it to be.<br />
<br />
On Monday, I shared <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/mixed-media-monday-featuring-tim-holtz.html" target="_blank">a mixed media layout </a>that I made for the February and today I'm sharing the pocket pages I made that go with the layout. I tend to take a lot of photos each month and a lot of them end up in this album. Also, I like to add embellishments and ephemera to the photos so some months have more pages than others. For example, in February I filled both sides of 3 pocket page protectors (8.5x11") to make 6 pages. That's a lot for one month but sister and her kids visited that month so there were a lot pics to fit in.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's a look at February's pocket pages starting with the first page. It's the page that is opposite the layout for this month.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28547174783/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 24_6"><img alt="Aug 24_6" height="640" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8199/28547174783_2f855a2abc_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
And here is the last page.<br />

<br />
<br />
The large transparency hearts are from The Freckled Fawn's <a href="http://freckledfawn.com/collections/all-kits/products/embellishment-kit-capture" target="_blank">January embellishment kit</a>. The puffy hearts, metal "love" clips and circle stickers are from their <a href="http://freckledfawn.com/collections/all-kits/products/embellishment-kit-lovely" target="_blank">February embellishment kit</a>. I am a sucker for these kits. They have the loveliest embellishments that are the perfect size for pocket page scrapping.<br />
<br />
So, there you have it. That's February 2016 done! I'm going to keep working away at this album for the next couple of weeks. I love looking back at all the photos while I'm scrapping. It's fun to remember how much fun we have had this year. It helps make the work worthwhile.<br />

</i><br />
<br />
This week, I am catching up on my 2016 Keeping Track Of Life album or KTOL for short. I took a <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/restarting-yearlong-project.html" target="_blank">look at my album</a> last week and realized I have so much work to do. Keeping Track of Life is an in-person class taught by my friend, <a href="http://hellokrista.com/" target="_blank">Krista</a> at my local store, <a href="https://thepaperie.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">The Paperie</a>. The class is similar to <a href="http://beckyhiggins.com/project-life/" target="_blank">Project Life</a> except it's a month-at-a-glace approach to scrapbooking with a layout added for fun instead of a week-by-week approach.<br />
<br />
In February, I missed class due to a snowstorm. Although Krista's instructions are included in the class, I decided to take the opportunity to add a mixed media layout to my album. Here it is!<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135348105/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_2"><img alt="Aug 22_2" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8261/29135348105_f44c10e446_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I made this background using the Tim Holtz Splatter Brush. I used it in a class I taught a few months ago and fell in love with it. It makes the most amazing splatters and is so easy to clean but I'm excited to show you how it makes the most amazing marks in wet medium.<br />
<br />
So, let's get started with the supply list and the instructions for this week's layout.<br />
<br />
Here are the supplies I used to make this week's layout. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.primamarketinginc.com/shop/heavy-gesso-white-16oz" target="_blank">Heavy Gesso</a> - Art Basics (Prima)<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.ca/Pro-Art-Canson-Extra-Watercolor-30-Sheet/dp/B0044JPXV4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1471223324&sr=8-2&keywords=canson+watercolor+paper" target="_blank">Watercolor Paper</a> (Canson)<br />

<a href="http://freckledfawn.com/collections/stickers/products/oct-felt-leaves" target="_blank">Felt Leaves</a> (Freckled Fawn)<br />
Vellum<br />
<br />
<u>Instructions:</u><br />
<br />
<b>1. Apply a thin coat of gesso to the watercolor paper. </b>This is always the first step of my process if I'm using acrylic paint or spray ink. A coat of gesso makes watercolor paper non-porous and that means that paint doesn't soak into the paper so I can remove mistakes with a wet baby wipe - sometimes. A thin coat doesn't take long to dry so I usually set mine aside but you can also dry with a heat gun. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Apply a thin coat of modeling paste through a stencil.</b> I love dimension so I use modeling paste in a lot of my layouts. Modeling paste holds marks really well which is perfect for the next step.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Drag the Splatter Brush through the modeling paste.</b> The Splatter Brush isn't only for splatters...<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135347825/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_4"><img alt="Aug 22_4" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8300/29135347825_41434428d2_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
If you lightly drag it through modeling paste, it makes the most amazing marks.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29102746516/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_5"><img alt="Aug 22_5" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8374/29102746516_0cddfc64fe_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Leave your stencil in place to act as a mask.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135347835/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_6"><img alt="Aug 22_6" height="800" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8004/29135347835_8a865a976f_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
When you're finished and have covered the whole background. Remove stencil and set the background aside to dry. <br />
<br />
<i>Important tip: Clean stencil and Splatter Brush immediately using baby wipes. When modeling paste dries, it is almost impossible to remove from stencils without a lot of hard work. I always clean up immediately after using modeling paste.</i><br />
<br />
Here's what the background looked like after everything was dry and ready for the next step.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28513607794/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_7"><img alt="Aug 22_7" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8385/28513607794_8a26e997bb_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>4. Replace stencil on dry background.</b> Line up the stencil with the original pattern you made in modeling paste. I used a little washi tape to hold it in place so my hands were free for the next step.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29102747576/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_8"><img alt="Aug 22_8" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8300/29102747576_2a00ed96ab_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Apply paint with Splatter Brush.</b> I used a few spritzes from my water bottle to water down the heavy body paint to a milk-like consistency. Then I swiped the brush through paint and splattered the paint on my background with the stencil in place.<br />
<br />
Here's a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnBXz3MrZsw" target="_blank">great video tutorial</a> Tim Holtz made that shows you how to make splatters using the Splatter Brush. He features the brush at the 4-minute mark.<br />
<br />
<i>Tip: The more water you add the bigger the splatters. </i><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135347525/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_9"><img alt="Aug 22_9" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8320/29135347525_04b7ec0814_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The stencil acts as a mask and you get something that looks like this. If you look closely, you can see that the ridges creating by the Splatter Brush catch the paint and keep it from dripping.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135347345/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_10"><img alt="Aug 22_10" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8408/29135347345_115f8793a2_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Add as many colours of paint as you like to create a multi-color backgound. I used all the colors of Dina Wakley paint that I had in my stash. Some of the colors bled under the stencil because the paint was very watery but I like the effect.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135348385/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_13"><img alt="Aug 22_13" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8428/29135348385_4d0db70149_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>6. Embellish. </b> I used the February Freckled Fawn embellishment kit for this layout. The colors of the puffy hearts, acrylic letters and painted wood buttons went perfectly with my bright, colorful background and silly photos. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29135348505/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 22_11"><img alt="Aug 22_11" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8391/29135348505_3182ac439b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
This technique is so fun and easy, I hope you consider giving it a try. The Tim Holtz Splatter Brush is definitely a tool that I am so happy to have because it it helps me use all my stencils and inks and paints in a new way. I love it when that happens.<br />
<br />
Please feel free to leave a note in the comments and say "hi". It's always lovely to meet the people who stop by my blog. And if you have any questions about products or techniques used, please leave a note and I'll get back to you. I am happy to help.<br />

Thanks for stopping by!<br />

Honestly, I'm a little surprised to admit it but this practice has become a part of my day. It's something that I always make sure I've done each day. I rarely have a plan when I start. I pick up my brushes and practice making flowers until I make something that I like and then I practice it over and over again.<br />
<br />
Here are the pieces I made this week.<br />
<br />
I was trying to figure out how to paint poppies. I am inspired by real flowers but I'm not trying to paint photo realistic flowers. My goal is to paint flowers that I think look pretty. Sometimes, it takes many tries to come up with something I like. I forgot to add the black centres and debated adding them later but I decided to leave them like this for now.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28781629950/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_1"><img alt="Aug 19_1" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8427/28781629950_27eccf9fd3_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29067865585/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_2"><img alt="Aug 19_2" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8402/29067865585_209628fefe_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
These flowers are poinsettia inspired. I was thinking that I could hand paint my own Christmas cards this year. Well, not all of them but maybe a few.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29069231005/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_3"><img alt="Aug 19_3" height="800" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8083/29069231005_d508f81a44_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28962416722/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_4"><img alt="Aug 19_4" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7732/28962416722_a1fbf6274d_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This is also the week that I discovered floral wreaths. I'm obsessed and not just because I love wreaths. It's a great opportunity for me to practice how to make a flower over and over again. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28781629790/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_5"><img alt="Aug 19_5" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8352/28781629790_95bef6f721_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29034928516/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_6"><img alt="Aug 19_6" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8396/29034928516_eb4034451a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28446823974/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_7"><img alt="Aug 19_7" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8552/28446823974_3c947d3ed1_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29034928376/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_8"><img alt="Aug 19_8" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8836/29034928376_5a958a2b16_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I love the bright colors of this one. It also feels balanced which is not always easy for me to do with these wreaths. I also experimented with overlapping blooms. It makes it look more realistic but I'm always afraid that I'll end up ruining it. I also had trouble with the leaves but that's why I'm practicing.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29034928906/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_9"><img alt="Aug 19_9" height="800" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8787/29034928906_7af917657b_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29034946646/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_10"><img alt="Aug 19_10" height="800" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8391/29034946646_aa988d9600_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And finally, this pretty soft wreath makes me so happy. I like how I was able to get really soft, watery colors for the blooms. I debated adding leaves and decided not to. I love how tone on tone looks and I didn't want to add anything else to this one.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/29034928836/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_11"><img alt="Aug 19_11" height="800" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8064/29034928836_e6ace7894c_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28991545041/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 19_12"><img alt="Aug 19_12" height="800" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7766/28991545041_99a0c7c381_c.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
To create the shape of the wreathes, I trace very lightly around a jar of gesso with a <a href="http://pilotpen.us/brands/frixion/" target="_blank">Pilot FriXion</a> pen. When I'm finished, I heat it with my heat gun and the marks disappear. You can see some of the pen marks I left in the piece above to show you. To get rid of them, I just have to heat the piece again.<br />
<br />
If you would like to see more of these watercolor pieces, please follow me on Instragram. I'm @cathiereed. I'm sharing my progress each week on my blog and you can see <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/art-journal-joy-seeking-progress-over.html" target="_blank">how I get started</a> and what <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/art-journal-joy-practice-over.html" target="_blank">Week 1</a> looked like. I hope you'll follow along.<br />

I haven't done much with it for a long time and after flipping through it this week, I realized that it needs some attention and work. <br />
<br />
The album is part of the <a href="http://hellokrista.com/ktol-2015-december/" target="_blank">KTOL</a> project that I work on each year. KTOL is short for "Keeping Track of Life" and it's a class that my friend, Krista, teaches at my local scrapbook store (<a href="https://thepaperie.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">The Paperie</a>). Each month we create a layout and pocket page spread with our monthly stack of photos. It's a lot of fun and I enjoy scrapping with my friends for a couple of hours each month. <br />
<br />
I haven't been working on my album in between classes so I bunch of half done pages and missing layouts. Specifically, I have to work on a layout for each month - that's all 7
layouts we've made so far in class. Some layouts are just missing photos
but I missed a couple of classes so those layouts are not even started. The situation is the same for
the pocket pages. I have February's pockets pages finished but all the
other months are not done. That's 6 months of pocket pages and 7 layouts - if we're still counting.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here are some of my almost done pocket pages for January. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28412993523/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 17_1"><img alt="Aug 17_1" height="640" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8074/28412993523_884c121502_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28410083204/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 17_2"><img alt="Aug 17_2" height="640" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8580/28410083204_53b60df539_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28410083134/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 17_3"><img alt="Aug 17_3" height="640" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8543/28410083134_5a9fbf2ab3_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
It
feels a bit overwhelming but I know it is doable because I have been
here before. Each year, I fall behind with this project. I am not a
chronological scrapbooker so this doesn't worry me but I know that if I
fall too behind it will be too overwhelming to finish. All the work is worth it though because I love this album when
it's done.<br />
<br />
So, now what? For me, the key to finishing this project is to make a list of what I need to do
to get "caught up" and to work on that list each week. Having a to-do list will keep me focused when I sit down to work. As I work my way through my to-do list, I will share my progress as I go. <br />
<br />
Wish me luck!<br />

Each week, I share a mixed media
layout and include the instructions. The instructions contain the steps
to make the project and contain any tips and tricks I have picked up
along the way. If you ever have any questions about techniques or
products that I used to make this layout, leave a note in the comments
and I will get back to you. I
know that mixed media can be intimidating but I think of it as a
creative adventure. Yes, it requires practice and patience but the
rewards are worth it - I promise! </i><br />
<br />
This week, my oldest son turned 9. I was inspired by his birthday to make a page for him. He's growing so fast and there are some things I want him to always remember. My color choice was inspired by <a href="http://prima.typepad.com/prima/2016/08/new-challenges-for-august.html" target="_blank">Prima's PPP challenge</a> for August. There is no such thing as too much blue in my world so I knew I had to participate. <br />

Dragonfly Wood Veneer (Prima) <br />
Palette Knife<br />
Old Paint Brush<br />
Sequins<br />
<br />
<u>Instructions:</u> <br />
<br />
<b>1. Mix 3D Matte Gel with Texture Powder. </b>Scoop some 3D Matte Gel and some Texture Powder on your craft mat and mix together with a palette knife. The more Texture Powder you use the grittier and more textural your paste will be. I shared how I make my paste in last week's <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/mixed-media-monday-inpsired-by-rose-gold.html" target="_blank">Mixed Media Monday</a> post. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Spread on watercolor paper through stencil with palette knife.</b> I placed my stencil randomly on my background and spread a thin coat of the paste through my stencil. Then I set it aside to dry. You can use a heat gun to dry it but if you overheat or "cook" the 3D Matte Gel it will puff up and you will lose the effect of the Texture Powder.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28911219161/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 15_2"><img alt="Aug 15_2" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8773/28911219161_a166b2f1ca_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Spread a thin coat of gesso with an old brush. </b>I always add a coat of gesso to my background. I like how the inks work and colors stay true when I use gesso. <br />
<br />
<b>4. Spray ink on background.</b> I bought some of the new Prima Color Bloom sprays this week. They arrived with just the pigment and a mixing ball in the bottle. When I got home, I added water and started spraying right away. I couldn't tell the difference from the original sprays that are shipped as liquid ink. They are gorgeous but only available for a limited time. Although I hope they decide to keep Fairy Pond (below).<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28911219081/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 15_3"><img alt="Aug 15_3" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8895/28911219081_01c5aa03c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>5. Stamp with background stamp. </b>I like to stamp on my multi-colored backgrounds in the Archival Inks that match my background. It adds an interesting tone-on-tone effect.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28370546073/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 15_4"><img alt="Aug 15_4" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8699/28370546073_d7be80b2f2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>6. Create sunburst pattern. </b>This week, I cut up my background to create a background pattern. I cut a strip from the 12x12 sheet. I flipped the paper over to the plain side and sketched out a sunburst pattern with a pencil. Then I numbered each section so I could put it back together in order on my background - a plain sheet of watercolor paper.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63603323@N00/28911219261/in/dateposted-public/" title="Aug 15_5"><img alt="Aug 15_5" height="640" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8803/28911219261_97bcb0d6d4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<b>7. Embellish. </b>To embellish this week, I added ink splatters and sequins, wound <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/mixed-media-monday-inpsired-by-rose-gold.html" target="_blank">twine around the pattern paper</a> and embossed wood veneer dragonflies.<br />
<br />
To create the dragonflies, I pressed each one into my Versamark ink and then sprinkled on Embossing Enamel. The Versamark causes the Embossing Enamel to stick to the shape so it doesn't blow away before I can emboss it with a heat gun. I heated the embossing enamel until it melted and set aside to cool. I love how it gives such a unique effect to the dragonflies.<br />

I also added a flip up to my layout.<br />

<br />
This week's layout is special to me. I wanted to remind my son about how important it is to be silly and adventurous and to always be true to himself. So, I made my journaling the title of my page. I thought that if I wrote it in journaling he might not read it. This way, he can never miss it. I like to think of it as leaving a note for him in my scrapbook. <br />
<br />
As always, you can leave a note in the comments if you have any questions
about supplies or techniques used to make today's layout.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />

<br />
Today, I am sharing all the art that I made this week as part of my Practice Over Perfection exercise. Last week, I wrote about <a href="http://cathiereed.blogspot.ca/2016/08/art-journal-joy-seeking-progress-over.html" target="_blank">my plan</a> to spend the rest of August painting watercolor flowers and sharing my progress. This week, I created 7 6x8" pieces and 3 4x6" pieces. The 4x6" pieces are rough drafts that I used to practice on before working on the larger 6x8" pieces. I have also doodled and practiced all over 12 4x6" cards.<br />
<br />
Here are this week's cards in order I made them.<br />

<br />
I have been using Prima's watercolor palette's for everything - the <a href="https://www.primamarketinginc.com/shop/catalog/product/view/id/9557/s/watercolor-confections-tropicals/category/486/" target="_blank">Tropicals</a> and the <a href="https://www.primamarketinginc.com/shop/catalog/product/view/id/9556/s/watercolor-confections-the-classics/category/486/" target="_blank">Classics</a> - and a variety of round brushes. I like to use what I have when I'm learning something new but I will probably add new supplies once I'm comfortable with what I already own.<br />
<br />
I originally planned to spend a minimum of 10 minutes day painting. I haven't kept track of how much time I have spent painting but I know I have gone way beyond my 10 minute minimum. Partly because I don't want to stop once I get started and partly because it takes me a while to figure out what to do and how to do it.<br />
<br />
<br />
As I complete each flower, I am sharing them daily on Instagram. This is an important part of the process for me. Sharing pieces that I don't like is hard sometimes but it encourages me to keep practicing so that someday the pieces are easier to share.<br />
<br />
I am eager to continue this project and will come back next week to share the next batch. <br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by today!<br />
